Wasabi "kills" mercury?!

Question: Last week at our local sushi bar, the lady behind the counter overheard me telling my bf about recent reports of high mercury levels in tuna. She said that we'd be safe because wasabi "kills" the mercury. Is she just trying to get us to keep buying those spicy tuna rolls, or is there any validity to what she said?

You can't kill a metallic element.

But wasabi does act as a disinfectant, so if there were any bacteria inside the fish, the wasabi would do a good job of neturalizing it so you wouldn't get sick.

I'd think it was a case of ignorance than willful negligence.

No thats a stupid comment.

Thats BS!

Wasabi probably kills everything. I don't believe thats true.

It doesn't...but when mixed with soy sauce..it is quite tasty.

No, she is not correct!

Mercury is a heavy metal and cannot be "killed" by wasabi or any other food.

There's a tree that you can plant in mecury ridden soil that will take up the mercury and make it useable. I don't think that tree is used in wasabi though.

Paper kills Rock!!

YEAH!

I seriously doubt wasabi could kick mercury's *** though, I mean Wasabi is what? A condoment, and Mercury is a planet!

I've heard of reports that wasabi kills bacteria, but it would not "kill" or filter mercury.

Wasabi kills some bacteria.... yes.
Mercury? No, it's like a baby fighting Superman.

Mercury is a metal so even a blow tourch won't kill it. ^_^

milk snakes milk cows too

how can Japanese horseradish kill any type of metal .
Mercury is a metal no this woman is talking out of her rear end none sense pure Tommy rot take no notice of this treat it for what it is garbage

lol haaaaa haaaaa ha..

amazing what people will say mercury is a metal it cant be killed and it ain't good 4 u don't eat the fish..

She's just trying to stay in business.

Mercury is a heavy metal and can only be removed through a chelation process. Wasabi isn't going to do squat except add flavor to your toxic tuna.

I doubt there would be any chemical action.
Any acid in the wasabi would not not be strong enough to react with the metal compound..
But the fear of mercury is rather over rated,, you need to consume a large amount (" of contaminated fish")

Wasabi is served to help combat organisms within raw fish that could be harmful. That is why it is served with sushi. The wasabi she was serving was probably not even wasabi. It is most likely horseradish. Check out this webiste.

No, it cannot be killed. She must've thought you were talking about a bacteria.

I would laugh in the lady's face.
Tell her she's lying and leave.
I'd question the quality of the place if they make up crap like that. "The tuna is 2 weeks old, but the wasabi kills the rotten tuna."

Mercury is not alive and can't be killed.
Also, wasabi does not absorb mercury from your body.

Yes, she's saying that to ease people's fears about mercury and get people to keep buying.

No there is no truth in this at all. Wasabi is only a substitute of horseradish which has no value at all except nutrition and it is used as a cure for a virus passed around by the fungus medusoid mycilum which is very fatal
