Does anybody know something about Lithuanian national food??!

Question: I really need some information about Lithuanian national food (at school). If anyone is from Lithuania it would be really great to ask you what are different foods and drinks, what are they made from, what do people eat everyday, for breakfast etc.
Thanks for your help!

First, correction about some of Emma's answers - I have never seen 'cepelinai' 20cm long. It's more like 10 cm. Also, we do produce 'starka' - it's actually one of my favorite alcoholic beverages. Try it with apple juice, it's awesome:)

Even though, we mostly eat meat (three times a day:), we also eat some fish. The delicacy is smoked eel, marinated herring. Over all, we eat a lot of smoked stuff - sausages, ham, bacon, fish, etc. Lots of potatoes, bread.

We also eat all kind of soups (usually for lunch). '?altibar??iai' (cold borsch) is probably the most unique - cold soup made out of buttermilk and beets.

We also love pancakes - both the regular ones and potato.

Tea and coffee are probably equally popular.

Check out the link to the menu of a very nice Lithuanian restaurant in Chicago:

Their menu has some American dishes as well but you should easily traditional Lithuanian dishes apart.

I hope this helps. If you need some more specific information, email me.

Now I am hungry:)

Cepelinai (singular - cepelinas) or Did?kukuliai is a Lithuanian national food. It is made from grated potatoes, usually containing ground meat, although sometimes dry cottage cheese (curd) is used instead.

The potato dish resembles a Zeppelin in its shape, and is about 10-20 cm long. The size depends on where it was made - in the western Lithuanian counties cepelinai are made bigger than in the east.

Cepelinai are boiled and served with sour cream sauce, or bits of bacon (cracklings).

They eat alot of the same thing polish people do, alot of dumplings, sausages, barley, potatoes, rye, beets, greens, and mushrooms are locally grown, and dairy products are one of its specialties. Other national foods include dark rye bread, cold beet soup (?altibar??iai), and kugelis (a baked potato pudding).Locally brewed beer (alus), vodka (degtin?), and kvass (gira) are popular drinks in Lithuania. Starka is a part of the Lithuanian heritage, but it is no longer produced in Lithuania.
