Name some "real" chinese foods (gift q)?!

Question: Okay so my BF is from Hong Kong. I want to buy him a box of real Chinese foods for Valentines day since we live in a very small town with very "white" food, and because I am on a business trip right now in the big city.

What are some really typical foods? I can buy some pre-prepared (like roasted duck) as well if they can survive in the fridge overnight.

It really depends how far you have to travel & the mode of transport eg. some food like roasted meats could be too fragrant & easily detected on airplanes.

Leaving the nitty gritty details aside (you can easily ask Chinese restaurant or grocery shop staff whether those food you have in mind travel well), some food that many homesick Hong Kongers & Chinese would appreciate are:
- Roasted meats: roast duck, soya sauce oil chicken, roast goose, roasted pork, BBQ pork (char siew) from a good Hong Kong style restaurant
- Dim sum items: Hong Kong BBQ pork bun, bo lo ('pineapple') bun, egg tart, char siew puffs, glutinous rice dumpling, wife's pastry
- If fresh food is impractical to travel with, there are also frozen versions and also dried food & condiments. Ask the Asian grocery store person for recommendations.

Actually I feel that the best gift would be if you stock up on some Chinese ingredients & learn to cook Chinese food to surprise him on that day. It would mean much much more than just a gift of things. I think what a lot of Hong Kongers miss is authentic Cantonese style rice porridge (congee). The distinguishing factor about Cantonese congee is the extremely smooth texture where the rice grains have completely broken down. See the below link for an example of the recipe. You can use chicken, pork, sliced fish, minced meat, pork liver etc. The century egg is also pretty essential.

About cooking Cantonese congee in rice cookers, the problem would be too short cooking time & probably incorrect temperature. Stove cooking gives better results. Report It

Chinese markets usually have good frozen stuff - Get the Roast pork and red bean steamed buns

    dumplings are also frozen

pickled veggies for meat stir fry

    soy milk

    egg custards

    the myriad of instant noodles

scallion pancakes - they come frozen also

    oyster sauce
    soy sauce

    pecking duck

Why not make him a home made dinner of American food? Bake some heart shaped cookies or cup cakes.
I'm sure he will greatly appreciate that. Since it was made by the hands of his girl friend.
Maybe you could wrap your self up like a Valentines present for him.

Go for dimsum if you are in a big city. Here are some examples:
    Shui Mae (steamed shrimp dumplings)
    Har Gow (steamed pork dumplins)
    Sticky Rice
Steamed buns with roast pork inside or sweet black bean inside
    Churng Fun (noodle like dish)
Pai Gwot (pork steamed in black bean)

    hope this helps.

beef jerky! well, taiwan makes it and ship it to hk but it's super good! well, it's half the price of what you'll pay in the states.

there's this chain snack food shop that carries many different kind of snacks like sour plums and candy, etc. i don't know the name of it in english but it's a chain w/ many locations through out hk.
