Why does indian food smell so bad?!

Question: You are so right about the rotten smell...I think they use substandard, well OK, bad, meat and produce and have to cover it with all that rank stuff. The reek of it makes me puke.

I believe that the taste is even worse.

It is all to do with your own perception, I love the smell of Indian foods.

some people find the smell of indian food so offensive because it uses a lot of strong spices that most people are not all too familiar with.

There are 1.136 BILLION people in India, and they ALL eat (and enjoy) Indian food...

Which is more likely? That you are mistaken, or that over a billion Indians are? LOL! Silly goose!

I love Indian foods from all regions.
I eat Indian food weekly;
but the gawd-awful unique smell used in some dishes is:
Asefoetida.
"Ferula assafoetida, (family Apiaceae), alternative spelling asafetida (also known as devil’s dung, stinking gum, asant, food of the gods, hing, and giant fennel) is a species of Ferula native to Iran…Asafoetida’s English and scientific name is derived from the Persian word for resin (asa) and Latin foetida, which refers to its strong sulfurous odor. Its pungent odor has resulted in its being called by many unpleasant names; thus in French it is known (among other names) as Merde du Diable (Devil’s SXXt); in some dialects of English too it was known as Devil’s Dung, and equivalent names can be found in most Germanic languages…" For more look at this site:

It might smell bad to you because you are not used to the spiced that are used, but it tastes good!!!

It's the curry seasoning. My ex used it on all that we ate. I hid it behind everything, all the way in the top cabinet. I wonder if she ever found it. That was about 10 years ago, imagine its smell now.

I think it smells great. But I love all the spices and curries.
