Why is American so obsessed with the "Speed" to prepare a meal?!

Question: why our culture emphasis so much on how fast we can prepare a meal? do we really need 5 minutes microwave dinner instead of a well-prepared, nutrition dinner with all the fresh ingredient? what do we gain from saving the cooking time? more TV?
whats wrong with taking time to cook and taking time to eat with your family?

I guess time constraints and laziness is the reason - I personally do not mind cooking a nice meal and taking my time about it but at times it is nice to spend that time with my husband and kids.

Because every one has a time limit on their life. No one has time to sit and eat with the family. That's real sad because they miss the opportunity to see how their kids are.....

I love to cook meals that need several hours. They taste so much better.

I think it's because they are always rush rush rush with their kids doing a ton of sports that they don't need and Americans are very lazy when it comes to their spare time. This combined with a flooded market of pre-packaged foods has made it easy for anyone to eat in a flash. Could be a reason why the country's getting so f*cking fat.

I spend about an hour or two every night cooking food for myself. Just me, it's nice.

I agree 100% I won't even answer questions that ask for Fast And Easy! I much prefer Quality and Passion/Nutrition/Taste!Style and Personality also

Hm.., Americans
they learn for generations that opening a cans is cooking. Anything involving more labour is considered a high end cooking. That brings another question. Why they are obsessed with having a gourmet kitchens in their homes when what they really need is a microwave.

Some people have to work multiple jobs in order to pay the bills and truly do not have time to spend cooking. It is very sad and unhealthy that we live in an economy that puts so many people in such a situation.
