Saffron is one of the most expensive articles of use in the kitchen... It is the STIGMA of a type of crocus (CROCUS SATIVUS LINNEAUS) called in spanish "la rosa del azafran" and must be harvested by hand, needing about 85,000 flowers to get 1 kilo of saffron) The saffron crocus fields are absolutely gorgeous when in full bloom, as they are a lovely light purple color!
The price runs about 2,500.00 euros per kilo (US $3,750.00 per kilo... aprox. $1855.00 per lb., that would come out to just about $116.00 per ounce)
The best quality saffron comes from La Mancha in Central Spain (plantations are around Ciudad Real & Albacete).
You can also find saffron from middle eastern countries such as Turkey, their price is slightly inferior.
roughly $50-55 USD but I have seen it as high as $80 USD
