Whys it called Rice and Peas, when they don't use peas?!


Question: Often foods are known by different names in different countries or evn regions of the same country. In this case, what is referred to as peas in this dish is probably better known to you as Black-eyed beans. Both peas and beans are what are known as Legumes. I call 'peas' those little round green things!

It's either black eyed peas (American South) or pigeon peas (Caribbean).

Gungo peas are what are supposed to be used, but because they are seldom in season then kidney beans are often substituted.

Risipisi is an Italian dish: rice and sweet peas
and Hopping John (Riz a pigeon) uses rice and pigeon peas .... and Rice with Gundules is an Hispanic dish ... and there are many similar combinations from all over the world

I think you've been scammed into paying more for plain rice. It's the classic bait and switch scam.

Yes, actually they do use peas that's the tradition recipe, they are gungo peas and most always used brown/basmati rice. So i don't know why you have seen it without peas unless it was white rice which does not blend well with the gungo
