O.K. I understand that corn meal is all wrong for corn tortillas and that I need corn flour. But has anyone?!

Question: used anything different? I mean I don't want to run down to the store for corn flour! I have just about every other known ingredient on the planet. So anyone have any creative ideas on how to make corn tortillas out of anything other than that Masa flour?

The corn used in corn torts are soaked in lime( calcium oxide) and made from a paste of said corn...so its a completely different animal from standard corn meal...which is just ground corn...dried hominies is a good place to start.....try grinding grits(not instant).

No. There isn't another way because corn tortillas are corn flour tortillas and that's that.

But, you could just play around with some other balance of flours and come up with something unique.

I've made whole wheat flour tortillas and I love them. I use about 1/2 AP flour and 1/2 whole wheat flour. I especially like them for chicken and veggie wraps with a ranch style dressing. I don't think that the whole wheat tortillas work well with traditional Mexican flavors except for guacamole.

I'd run to the store...if you still don't want to...Good Luck.

Just a thought, you may be able to use your food processor to make flour out of the cornmeal you do have.

grind the corn meal finer.
