Hello there my Brit cousin!

In the U.S. generally pies are indeed for desert. For some reason we never really adapted the whole idea of meat encased in a flaky crust. I will say that I do like Beef Wellington though.

However, there are a few exceptions. We do eat meat in pies, but they're called pot pies, and although kinda common, certainly not considered overall common "American" food. The name is probably taken originally from the name of how they were made, and to us, they kind of resemble a dish in a "pot" of sorts of flaky pie crust.

The most common are chicken pot pie, turkey pot pie, and beef pot pie. We don't really do kidney, potato or lamb though.

The embracing of meat with some sort of dough based baked or fried bread stuff never caught on over here. I will say this though. I've seen Yorkshire Pudding on television before, and although I've never tried it, it really looks delicious. With all that gravy and everything. Someday perhaps I'll get the chance to do so.

I like the pies you mentioned, except for the kidney one as I have not tried it so can not pass judgement.

I love chicken pot pie and shepherd's pie, which are kind of like the ones you mention above. I love all pie, whether it's sweet or savory!

No, us Americans eat, chicken pot pie and Shepards pie for dinner.

I love pies, I do prefer the sweet variety as a dessert. Chicken Pot Pie is probably the most common "savory" pie here in the US. I see it in the frozen foods section, I dont think too many people make it from scratch.

Those pies are OK for main course. Our dessert pies are fruit or cream type pies. As in American as apple pie.

Americans eat chicken pot pie, and that's not dessert, but I would say that some of what you mentioned is considered very odd in the US.

I make Chicken Pot Pie (but it's deep dish and only has a top crust) and Cheeseburger Pie which is actually closer to a quiche than a pie. I have made beef pot pie and shepherd's pie (which I believe is close to your meat and potato), but they aren't my favorite. I think that savory pies have become more of a single portion frozen fast food than something we make for a family meal.

I must say, I prefer dessert pie.

wow... is this a joke... or are you simply forgetting apple pies, chocolate pies, key lime pies and pumpkin pies... or do you really not eat desert pies in Britain???

If it's the first you really aren't funny, if it's the second oops that must be embarrassing, and if it's the third then WOW!!!

i dont even like pie lol, but theres like apple pie and fruits and ice cream u know sweet stuff or just no dessert at all

well what we call a pie and what you call a pie are two different things. just as you call most desserts "puddings," pudding is a very specific dish here.

we do enjoy chicken pot pies, and similar casserole type dishes that are baked in crust, but dessert pies are sweet. usually fruit or cream fillings. but dessert is very varied: cakes, cookies, frozen treats, ice cream, cobblers, fudge, candy, tortes, fruit items, pastry, etc.

For the most part, pie is a sweet dessert in America. There are small communities throughout the nation where "meat pies" are sold... they are ground beef and spices tucked inside a thin dough (sort of like pie crust pastry) and deep fried, and are shaped like a half-circle. But those are pretty hard to find.

Does Steak & Kidney Pie really have animal kidneys in it? Or is it kidney beans?

I enjoy savory pies too! Mmm, yum.

Dunno I live in Australia!

I love British cooking and have ate all you've mentioned. I also make my meat pies from scratch--similar to stew but in a pie crust. Love to have recipes for Chicken and mushroom, Steak and kidney. Thanks Love them all!

i love shepherds pie but its hard to find a place that makes a quality Shepherds pie.
