What is Dim Sum?!

Question: Dumplings are often served as dim sum, but dim sum is MUCH more than just dumplings!

It's just a variety of light foods served on little plates, usually in little individual steamers. Lots of seafood, different types of dumplings, veggies, small servings of sticky rice wrapped in different ways, small custards, etc. You'll even find little plates of duck feet or chicken feet in a spicy sauce!

When a restaurant does dim sum, usually several servers will wheel around a carts. They show you what they have and you point to what you want (if anything). At the end of the meal, they count up the different types of plates on your table and write out your bill.

Dim Sum is the name for Appitizers. Like Hors d'oeuvre is in French or Tapas is in Spain. Hope this helps.

Adding to what christnp wrote...There really is a HUGE variety of ingredients used in creating Dim Sum. You'll find a variety of seafood, pork, chicken, beef used in various savory dishes. Dim Sum is equal to the British experience of having "Tea" (formally with cucumber tea sandwiches, scones, Devonshire cream...). However, the menu is far more extensive when you eat Dim Sum. It is also an "experience" more than just a meal...you take time to be in the company of friends, sharing & sampling foods...enjoying the moment & all the flavors that are set before you. If you haven't had Dim Sum before...you really should try it. Go with an open mind promise yourself that you'll give things a try...at least just a bite. I think you'd enjoy it.
