Answers: If a restaurant serves "Mediterranean Food", what type of food would that be, and where in the world would it be considered from?

Definition of Mediterranean diet

Mediterranean diet: A diet traditionally followed in Greece, Crete, southern France, and parts of Italy that emphasizes fruits and vegetables, nuts, grains, olive oil (as opposed to butter) and grilled or steamed chicken and seafood (as opposed to red meat). Plus a glass or two of red wine.

To be exact, there is not merely one Mediterranean diet. What is eaten varies significantly from one Mediterranean country to another. There also are major differences in diet between some regions within a country, as in Italy. However, the shared features of what is usually spoken of as the Mediterranean-style diet are as follows:

High consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds;
Olive oil is the key monounsaturated fat source;
Dairy products, fish and poultry are consumed in low to moderate amounts;
Little red meat is eaten;
Eggs are eaten zero to four times a week; and
Wine is drunk in moderate (or low) amounts.

The countries that have inspired the Mediterranean diet all surround the Mediterranean Sea. These cultures have eating habits that developed over thousands of years. In Europe, parts of Italy, Greece, Portugal, Spain, and southern France adhere to principles of the Mediterranean diet, as do Morocco and Tunisia in North Africa. Parts of the Balkan region and Turkey follow the diet, as well as Middle Eastern countries like Lebanon and Syria. The Mediterranean region is warm and sunny, and produces large supplies of fresh fruits and vegetables almost year round that people eat many times per day. Wine, bread, olive oil, nuts, and legumes (beans and lentils) are other staples of the region, and the Mediterranean Sea has historically yielded abundant fish. The preparation and sharing of meals is a very important and festive part of Mediterranean culture as well, and Mediterranean cuisine is popular around the world for its flavors.

Its basically Italian food. Italy

Spain,Italy.
Food from Spain is not hispanic food!

Mostly Greece, Lebanon, Turkey,Morocco....
The food is similar..

This food usually doesn't include Spain and hispanic type food.

that means Greek. Italian too.. but normally they will just say Italian. This is Greek.. so lots of lamb, veggies and olive oil

I think it usually means Greek food but it also includes some Arabic cuisine like Turkish, Palestinean etc. Some people also count some Italian dishes as Mediterranean. You can expect to encounter recipes that use olive oil, olives, goat cheese, chickpeas (garbanzo beans), lamb, chicken, pastas, couscous, roasted veggies, eggplant, dates, and rice. Examples of recipes are Pastitsio, Baklava, Spanikopita (greek), Hummus, Babaganoush (various places).

In the U.S., "Mediterranean food" is usually Greek or Lebanese food: gyros, hummus, shawarma, dolmas, baklava, etc. Delicious when done right.

In the U.S. the term "mediterranean food" commonly means Greek and Turkish style food. Not always, though.

More upscale restaurants will (correctly) use the term for cuisine from the Mediterranean regions of Europe, including Italy and France, along with other Mediterranean countries like Greece The style of those regions is lots of fresh veggies, olive oil, seafood, tomatoes, grilled meats. Less emphasis on heavy, creamy, buttery stuff.
