Were fortune cookies started by Japanese or Chinese?!
Answers: There has been a lot of talk lately about if fortune cookies started in the US and whether they are Japanese or Chinese in origin. Does anyone have any thoughts on the subject?
This is an interesting topic because there are so many possible stories. It definitely did not start in Japan or China, although it is most likely linked to something in one of the two countries because an immigrant in California started it in the early 1900's.
There was even a mock debate in the Court of Historical Review as to the originator. The decision was that it was started in San Francisco and the most likely origin came from a Japanese American. Then when the Japanese were sent to internment camps, the Chinese picked up on it.
There is a new funny documentary about the mystery surrounding this cookie, the many possible origins and how a fortune cookie even caused 110 people in the Midwest to win the Lottery.
