Is RAMEN really bad for you? How can anything with that combination of tastiness and cheapness be good?!

Question: The question pretty much says it all.

Answers: The question pretty much says it all.

One serving of instant noodles could be up to 20g of total fat, and since many manufacturers use palm oil the saturated fat level is also higher. The sodium & MSG levels in the seasoning packet is another story. Some brands also have a separate packet of flavoured oil. So the calories, fat, sodium etc really adds up, especially for those who practically live on this daily. It may be cheap & good to eat, but certainly not good for you. There are actual cases of people who died from solely eating this stuff everyday.

But it's not all doom & gloom. You simply have to make better choices. If available, buy reduced fat & no MSG added brands that bake their noodles instead of deep-frying, the fat content could be only about 4g. It may be slightly more expensive, but good health is priceless. There's also fat-free noodles but the ones I've tried taste like cardboard. Also, the best thing is not to use the seasoning packet at all. You can easily mix up your own unique seasonings from some sauces or use light chicken stock, and add some fresh/frozen veggies, lean meat & beaten egg for more nutrition.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. Check out the sodium content. Not to mention the fat and calories and the fact that it is pretty much void of nutritional value, other than starch. It will keep you alive, lol.

I had a friend in college that used to cook the noodles for one meal and save the broth mix and eat it for a second meal. 5 cents a meal, you can't beat that :-}

I hate to break the sad news to you my friend, because I too am a lover of Ramen...but the sad fact is that they are now around 35-40 cents per pack.
No, I shop grocery stores and liquor stores, but I live in California and I boycott Wal-mart.

Noodles are cheap to make. I think the worst part of it is the seasoning packet... try to leave it out, make up your own seasonings, or at least use only half of it!

Oh how I love ramen. I had some for lunch! However-one package has 14 grams of fat, which I think is a lot for something that only fills you up for about one hour. And the seasoning packet is sodium overload and also contains MSG. I only use half the packet so I don't get a blood pressure spike and the MSG aches.

its the cheapest thing out there. im from hawaii and that is a meal. I just dress it up and make the nutritional value a bit better by using garlic in the soup, only using half the soup base and more water, putting vegetables like bok choy or won bok and imitation fish cake. but it'll give you something to eat when your out of money.

If you eat ramen 3 times a day everyday for 365 days, YES it is bad for you healthwise; eat it once in a while it's harmless for a person with generally good health. Over in Asia, we prefer them fresh... and eat them very often. We're still standing, yeah yeah yeah....

ramen may be cheap in price but, look at the nutritional values. Sodium (salt) 45 to 85% daily value
Carbs 45 grams per package (2 servings) but who shares 1 package
You get the point.
They are tasty but they shouldnt be eaten every day and you should not use the whole package of seasoning

Ramen doesn't have to be bad for you. Yes alone they don't really offer any nutrition but you can always add stuff to it and it still tastes GREAT!!

Left over spaghetti sauce is my kids favorite.

Crack 2 eggs into the broth as it's cooking, and you have instant egg drop soup!

Chop up a hot dog and add a slice of cheese

I love Ramen as well because when you have a to feed a family of 6 on a 5 buck budget, it comes in VERY handy!!

look at the sodium content. When you calculate the price, add the cost of a heart stent or a bypass, and you'll get the real price.
I love Ramen, but they are terrible for you.

The ramen themselves are okay. It's the stuff we put on or with them that's offensive to our body.

The Muse

Ramen is the bomb!
Its a favorite for Soldiers in the field-lots of salt and fluid to help keep you healthy while working in the heat. Throw in some red chili or better yet Kimchee, and you are good to go for a couple of hours.
Lightweight too for your field kit!

ya its really bad because its oilly and the cheaper the unhealthier
