I made lots of 'Upma', my family didn't finish the lot. Actually I was expecting a family of six to join us!

Question: for breakfast, they cancelled at the last moment. That is why the extra 'Upma'. I have put a lot of raisins and cashews in it along with veggies. So I don't want to throw it away. What else can I do with the balance ?

Heat a little oil and temper some mustard seed. When they start spluttering add chopped onions and green chillies. Once onions turn translucent add skinless urad and channa dals. Let them cook and change colour. Now add a finally chopped tomato, half teaspoon of turmeric and fry. Add curry leaves and add the left over upma.
Voila a new dish is ready.

freeze it in ziploc freezer bags for when they all come join you again. Be sure to get the extra air out of the bag so your upma doesn't get dried out and freezer burned. ENJOY

what's upma ? please explain :)

Well I agree w/ the idea to freeze it. So much depends what else you put in it. When I have left over oopma from breakfast my hubby and I generally end up eating it again as a tea time snack. How sweet/spicy is it? You might be able to change it into a sweet if you haven't made it too spicy by frying in ghee and adding sugar. If you have made it w/ more spice or w/ onions, tomato, or chas then you might think about using it in place of your rice at lunch (almost that time). If you have already made rice then you can use that to make debrah (rice teplah) for dinner. Otherwise put it in the fridge and make your family suffer through eating it tomorrow for breakfast.

I like the idea of freezing it, like I said but we almost never use the fridge in my house so we don't generally keep leftovers.

Well..Freeze it.and if only ur family is going to consume it, u can take it out when u want to eat it, and make "upma upma" :)
Just heat a tablespoon of oil and splutter mustard seeds and curry leaves,,and mix the upma along with it and heat it, till all of it gets heated up. Once heated, you can have it during evenings or even as breakfast..if properly stored, it wont get bad for 3-4 days. Do remember only to take out what is necessary from the freezer and keep the rest safely in the freezer compartment.
