May I ask, what is a"roti shop"? I'm in the USA.?!

Question: These are popular through the Caribbean, esp in Trinidad & Tobago. Roti shops sell Indian flatbread usually stuffed with a variety of fillings similar to a burrito.

In contrast, rotis are simply plain flatbreads in India. There are no specific shops that sell rotis. Most people eat them fresh in India along with vegetable dishes or dal.

Roti means bread, so it could be a bakery shop?

Roti shop refers to restaurants or stores that sells roti dishes.

A lot of Roti shops are Caribbean based and focus primary on items like curry goat, curry chicken, dhal curry as the main stuffing.

However..

There are other types of roti which can also be found in authentic Thai and Malaysian restaurants. These are served much different than their Caribbean counterparts. One they are often a lot smaller. Second they are eaten with either stews or as a snack/dessert with condensed milk.

i.e Malaysian style roti canai.

Also in some Indian restaurants, you can find East Indian style roti. Different from the Caribbean and SE Asian rotis again.

So a roti shop can mean different things to different people.

Though when you say Roti shop, most people would first think of the Caribbean style eats.

btw, my Mom who is Guyanese Black makes very very tasty roti! mmmmmmmmmmmm. We eat it with chicken most of the time though. Or just plain chickpeas (which we call dhal)

As for my dad who is Jamaican Chinese, he doesn't really make roti. Though he can make an awesome pot of curry goat!

lol its funny to see my momma from Guyana making a batch of roti and; seeing my dad complain how she never wants to eat it with the curry goat he made the night before lmfao!
