Its definately not part of the aussie cuisine, but i worked in a mexican restaurant with an old asian guy as a chef, and he ate balut a couple of times a week!. He loved it with soy sauce, and loved grossing us all out by eating half and then sneaking up on us with the uneaten half exposed for us all to see!. EEeeeeaw!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am Indian & balut is a far cry from what we are used to eating - to each his own ,if balut is what makes you happy then happy eating!.
Like you, some foods are just off my list, never understood why one needs to bend over backwards to taste something that does not appeal or frankly freaks one out!.With global cuisine as vast as it is today ,i feel very comfortable with choosing from what foods appeal to me!.
Cheers to those who are open to trying any food, but i am not on this list !.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, certainly balut is a hardcore acquired taste (or sight!?), I think much more so than stuff like durian, century eggs, dim sum chicken feet & other notorious Asian delicacies that most Westerners wouldn't touch unless dead drunk!.
Although I've never tried it & don't intend to (despite having tried other 'weird' stuff), I think the shock factor is probably more of seeing (or imagining) the boiled duck embryo with the head, beak, feathers etc, rather than the taste!.
Although most people won't touch it, at least know what it is just as an education, right!? Warning, the below link will show balut photos from Google Images, don't view before & after meals if you've a weak stomach!. Look at the photo of the balut street vendor so you can recognise & avoid it if travelling in the Philippines :)
