I am a former chef from Canada and Jicama is a native ingredient to the Southwest U!.S, and not known very well in the UK, as for Asian place having it, I doubt it, I have travelled in the UK and not seen it, and as a former chef I go to markets, gourmet shops, ethnic areas to see the different thing there when in England!.
If you want a close substitute either water chestnuts, whole or sliced are a good almost, even Japanese Daikon radish, smaller ones that are not to strong!. You can try the Asian markets to see if they have it but I am pretty sure you will be better off with the waterchestnuts, and some may have fresh ones, they look like regular chestnuts and raw have a more similar taste to Jicama!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
