Question: I'm trying to find a sweet coconut dessert from India!.!?
My mom was adopted from India(Madukkaraj, Tamil Nadu) when she was very young and she remembers eating a coconut tastin dessert tha was very sweet and was the size of an egg!. She remembers it as very soft!. And I was hoping to find it for her and make it for her for her 40th birthday!. I'd be really grateful if anyone could help me find it!. Thanks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i think its Naru or somethng!.its a ball made of coconut!.heres the recipe:
u grate or take white part of coconut from the coconut!.
then u put it on the stove and mix sugar!.
then u take it from the stove and let it cool!.
later when a little cool u make small balls off it and put it into the refrigerator!.

Ingredients
For the filling:
2 cup shredded fresh coconut
1 cup jaggery *(see below)
1 teaspoon roasted poppy seeds
1 teaspoon rice flour
3-4 cardamoms

For the outer cover:
1 cup rice flour
1 cup water
1 teaspoon ghee
? teaspoon oil
a pinch of salt


Preparation
Filling:


1 Combine and cook coconut and jaggery together on medium heat!. Stir continuously until they are mixed properly!. Do not overcook!.

2 Add cardamom, roasted poppy seeds and 1 teaspoon rice flour to the mix!. Cook for some time!.


3 Remove from the heat and allow it to cool!.


Outer Cover:


4 Boil 1 cup of water!. When bubbles rise on top, add ghee, salt and oil and immediately add rice flour!. Stir well!. Cover for some time!. Remove the lid and stir and cover again for a minute!.

5 Remove from heat!. Take all the mixture in a flat plate!. Knead it properly while hot (You can use a flat bowl for kneading to keep the hands from burning)!. Make a soft pliable dough!.
(Do it very carefully!. The dough should be neither too sticky nor too dry!.)

Method:

6 Divide this dough into small balls!. Roll each ball into 1!.5 inch diameter circle!. Hold it in a hand and make a small bowl of it!. Put some coconut filling into this bowl shaped dough!. Dip thumb and index finger in the oil and make 5-6 small pinches side by side on the edges of the bowl!. Bring them together, join to form a peak!. It should look like a whole garlic!. Prepare all other modaks like this!.

7 Spread a damp cloth onto a flat round sifter and arrange all the modaks onto it!. Place the sifter in a steamer and cover!. Steam for about 15 minutes!.
(Use a big size saucepan or pressure cooker if you don't have a steamer!. Do not put the whistle if you use the pressure cooker!.)

8 Serve with the ghee!.

Ingredients:

Freshly grated coconut 1 cup
Sugar 3/4 Cup
Milk 1 cup
Ghee/oil 2 tbsp!.
Cardamom powder 1/2 tsp!.




Method:

1!. Heat a heavy bottomed pan for about one minute!.
2!. Add ghee to the pan and heat it!. Then put the coconut and continuously fry it till it becomes dry!.
3!. Then add sugar and milk!. Stir it continuously!. Bring the contents to boil!.
4!. Add a pinch of cardamom powder for flavour!.
5!. Boil the srup till it becomes thick and starts sticking to the bottom!.
6!. Then add 1 tbsp!. ghee and stir it for about half minute!. The mixture should be soft!.
7!. Pour the mixture into a greased pan so that it spreads evenly!. Let it dry for 5-7 min and then cut into square/diamond shape pieces!.

Optional
Decorate it with a layer of silver foil!.
You can also use fine grated coconut available in the market!. Use fresh grated coconut for best taste!.

it could be either, try both before hand and choose the best!.
Im south african Indian and what you describing sounds like what we call coconut-ice, but i cant seem to find a recipe(see if you can find anything on the net)
