Answers:
Sashimi is raw fish or other seafood (usually fish though!.)
Sushi refers to the rice actually!. Sushi rice is a bit shorter grain, and is mixed with a bit of rice wine vinegar and sometimes sugar to give it that slightly sweet taste!. Sushi is usually served with sashimi or vegetables!.
Maki means "roll"!. It's a type of sushi that is typically made by putting a bed rice down on a sheet of seaweed, along with some other filling (fish, veggie, etc!.) It's then rolled up like a cigar and sliced into 6 pieces!.
Some other terms you'll encounter:
Nigiri!. This is the classic sushi dish with a small pad of rice topped with a piece of fish, or veggie and is sometimes tied with a ribbon of seaweed!. You get two pieces per order!.
Temaki!. This is a hand roll (te = hand, maki = roll) Seaweed, rice, and other stuff rolled into something that looks sort of like an ice cream cone!. It's called a hand roll because it's rolled by hand, whereas the normal maki use a small bamboo mat to help give the roll its shape!.
Most sushi varieties include raw fish or raw veggies!. Eel is cooked (and very tasty) as is the tamago (scrambled egg!.)
For the beginning sushi taster, I'd recommend the following items:
* Maguro (tuna) - the classic first piece of sushi just about everyone tries!.
* Ebi (shrimp)
* Sake (salmon)
* California roll - avacado, cucumber, and krab salad wrapped so that the rice is on the outside instead of the inside!.
If you want to get more daring try these:
* Ika (squid)
* Tako (octopus)
* Unagi (eel)Www@FoodAQ@Com
