Question: I'm Clueless! Going to a sushi bar for the first time!.!?
Any suggestions!? What should I order!? How to order!? How to eat it without making a fool of myself!? Thanks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
1!. Don't add soy sauce too much into a shallow dish!.

* Some people who can't taste sushi tend to flavor sushi with too much soy sauce so they think they can taste sushi!. But they are not tasting sushi, but soy sauce!. And these people also tend to put too much soy sauce into a shallow dish!. So don't add too much soy sauce into it!.

2!. It's always good to order green tea, sake or Japanese beer!.

3!. Don't put too much wasabi into soy sauce!.

Again some people who can't taste sushi have a tendency to add too much soy sauce AND wasabi!. You don't really need to add too much wasabi!. Otherwise, you will ruin the flavor of sushi!.

4!. Don't put soy sauce on sushi rice but raw fish if you order Nigiri!.

5!. Eat pickled ginger to reflesh your mouth!.

6!. If you want to eat sushi like how Japanese people do, order Nigiri and gunkan maki more than long rolls and hand rolls!.

* Because these days, eating sushi has become trendy, so many people try to eat sushi!. But if you order long rolls more than nigiri, you will become the typical American who just tries to eat sushi!.

7!. If you don't know what to order, just ask a sushi chef which one is good to try first!. People who usually go to a sushi bar tries to communicate with sushi chef!.!.!.well at least that's what Japanese people do!.

8!. If you get a hot towel, use it to clean your hands before you eat sushi!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There were a few decent suggestions here, but I'd like to add one!.
Don't pass up yellowtail if they have it and it is absolutely fresh!. It's very mild and melts in your mouth like butter!.
Eat sushi with the fish side down so you taste the fish before the rice!.
It is considered gauche to dip the rice portion of the sushi into soy sauce; only use a tiny bit on the fish!. You can add wasabi to the soy sauce!. For beginners, the ratio should be about one part wasabi and 10 parts soy sauce!. Use the low sodium soy sauce to compliment the sushi best (it's the one in the green-topped bottle)!. The regular stuff in the red-topped bottle is WAAAY too salty!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Usually order about two rolls and one or two things of sushi!. Or if your feeling brave, order a thing of sumashi, which is just the raw fish!. You're not expected to eat everything, but you want to have a little verity!.

Ordering is just like a normal restaurant, some places give a card where you can just put a the number of each item you want!.

The cheaper rolls are often the safest ones to try, flavor wise!. Philadelphia and California rolls are the most common!. My favorite is the Spider Roll!. Don't be afraid to try something new!. Being scared to try eating what you got is half the fun!.

Most people I've gone with seem to like eel a lot!. Sounds gross, but it's tender and not slimey!. (unless they cooked it wrong, then it's a little chewy)

It doesn't matter if you eat them with chopsticks or a fork, but you are supposed to eat the pieces in one bit!. But if the piece is huge, cut it all you want!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, Sushi ROLLS are what you'd typically think of as sushi, rolled in the seaweed!. People say start with Cali rolls because I think they dont contain fish, but honestly, I hate Cali rolls!. If I were you Id try something that says tempura fried on it, with yummy things like Cream Cheese in it!. MmmM! Those are the best!. So read the descriptions!. Crab, Shrimp, all good!.!.!.!.

Another kind is ngiri, which is just a piece of fish on top of rice!. Sometimes, depending on the quality of the fish, can taste a little fishy to me!.!.!.but I do love eel!. It comes with sweet tasty sauce on it!.!.!.!.try that!. I wouldnt try anything else really!.!.!.

The other kind is sashimi!. That is JUST slices of raw fish!. Tuna is expensive, or Toro (the underside of the tuna) and my hubby LOVES it, its a little too 'raw' for me!.!.!.I like to have other flavors and tastes!.!.!.!.so if you're REALLY adventurous, get some sashimi!

Chances are you'll all choose something different and try a little of everything!. Be adventurous!. Use chopsticks if u can!. Usually you eat it in one bite, but some are really big!.!.!.!.so 2 will do!. If you dont like a certain kind, dont swear off sushi, just try something else!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yeah, definitely ask your friends or the server for suggestions!. You should look at how big the servings are!. If you're ordering sushi, people usually order 2 different things because you get several pieces of each!.

I think stuff with shrimp is pretty good/not too weird!. Avoid the little orange eggs!. They're kind of weird!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's not for people who go there alot but, as for a dish that won't gross you out on your first trip, get the "California Roll"!.

also, don't let anyone talk you into trying the "Wassabi" on your first trip! (little green clay looking ball) The stuff is very hot if your not used to it!. Makes your mouth, throat, and sinuses feel like they are on fire!. When you get ready to try it, because as yor pallete develops you will want to incorporate it into some dishes, use very small amounts until you find how much works for you!.

You wan't it to be fun!.!.!. and gradually try new things!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Just try what sounds good to you!. I like most things with "tuna" in the name, so try starting off with things that contain what you like!. Don't be afraid to experiment though, I'm not too experienced with sushi but I've already learned that if you don't experiment, you won't have as much fun!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

About a year ago I was taken to a sushi bar for the first time!. I thought it was "okay!." But then I tried another sushi bar recently and I really have acquired a taste for this one!. The meat is just barely cooked, just enough to keep it from being raw!. I like it just fine!. Platters of sushi are put out on a bed of ice and it's a sushi buffet bar!.!.!. you just help yourself to what you want!. There are condiments there also!. Wasabi, etc!. It's really nice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'd recommend a Tuna Roll and California Roll!.

Tips with Chopsticks: You'll soon learn how to hold them!. You use them to grab the sushi!.

Tips with Soya Sauce: It's yummy, you have it to put some extra flavor/get rid of some stuff in the fish!. You dip your sushi in it!.

Tips with wasabi: It's a VERY SPICY green matter that should be taken CAREFULLY, believe me!. If you wanna try it, mix some of it with the Soya Sauce!.

Tips with ginger: It's basically a slice of!.!.!. something!. It's used to refresh the mouth of the fish taste!. Use it when you're gonna try a new sushi flavor!.

Believe me, you WILL enjoy it :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

just say hi !.!.I'm here to be trendy , I want to pretend to like this shi/ so I feel!. and or look Kool!.!. they will be glad to charge you out the butt for some rice and raw fish!.!. which really cost pennies!.!.!. but you can walk away on your cell talking to your gals like!.!. oh ya um I'm just leaving the sushi bar and!.!.!.

good luck with that!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Get a Seaweed Salad to start those are always good!.
Then get Tuna sashimi which is thin sliced raw tuna that really good!.

I always get a Black Tiger roll where I go Its a spicey tuna roll its really good!.

And of course Saki!! (if you're over 21 of course if not well just get water)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Take it easy on the Wasabi!.!.!.but make sure you try some!.

Don't think about what it looks like (kinda like eating guacamole, we all know it looks like baby poo)!.

Ginger, ginger, ginger!.

Don't leave without trying eel!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

IF you dont like cucumbers, seaweed leaf, and papaya, DO NOT ORDER the california roll!.

it was my 1st time trying sushi today and it was utterly grossssssssssWww@FoodAQ@Com

I advise you not to order so much, sushi bars are really exspensive!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

u can eat this dish called mike hunt say i wnt to eat mike hunt to the waiter really fast and find out what it isWww@FoodAQ@Com

california rolls are good and safe to try!. Take it easy on the wasabi!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The only people who are making fools of themselves in a sushi bar are the ones eating the RAW fish!.

My (ex) Japanese wife kept trying to explain to me that it is "special" fish, but in my mind you catch fish raw, but you don't ever eat them that way!.

I would tell the waiter to take that roll back to the kitchen, dip it in batter and fry it!.

And I would consider myself the smartest person in the room!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
