It's a Sicilian sweet thick wine!. Yes, some tiramisu' recipes call for marsala but it's up to you if you want to add it, few people don't like the liquor taste in tiramisu'!.

I am a former chef and it is a fortified wine like port, sherry and maderia, and anyone of those can be used in the zabaglone for the tiramisu base!.
