Japanese Food - Mochi Balls... Need Help Please!!!
ok, so I'm seeing Mochi balls and they look Absolutely Delicious!! But I have never tried them and want to know what they taste like! also, I saw these Mochi balls and REALLY want to try them, but I don't know what kind they are or even what they are called!. Here is the link to the picture, any help would be greatly appreciated!! also, if you know one, I would like to have a recipe for homemade mochi balls!. If you have a recipe for the picture type as well MARVELOUS!! also!.!.!. Before I forget, where can I get them!? Can you get them at a Japanese hibachi grill!? Or is there somewhere they can be purchased!? Other than Japan of course! :) Thanks!

Mitarashi is a syrup made from soy sauce, sugar and starch!.
Dango is Japanese dumpling made from *rice flour!.

The picture you have provided is of (o)dango!. The mochi itself doesn't have a very bold flavor, but the sauce that it's paired with and the grilling imparts a delicious flavor!. Dango can be sweet or savory, but the picture you have provided is of the savory variety (the sauce is still kind of sweet though, as it's a sweet-savory kind of flavor)!.
Authentic mochi (not the microwave kind) is rather difficult to make from scratch on your own, but you can buy it in the frozen food section of your local asian supermarket (doesn't have to be a Japanese supermarket, necessarily)!.
A lot of times, you can find odango served at yakiniku (bbq-type) restaurants!. I don't think they're normally available at hibachi-type restaurants!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I personally have only tried ice cream mochi balls(which are good!), and those they sell at Trader Joe's!. They have flavors from Strawberry, Chocolate, Mango, to Green Tea and Vanilla!. They might sell some mochi balls in general there at the store but, I haven't checked!. They would also sell mochi balls at a Japanese Market!.

kb's answers are correct!. They are Mitarashi Dango!. If you want to make them, the ingredients can be bought on-line at Japan Super!. Look under the Grocery - Flour category!.

Mochi is pounded rice made mostly for new years eve and you can buy them at asian store and at some Japanese restaurant and I think you have to buy a special rice flour for making it but I'm not sure of that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
