I have tried one type of sushi and it had just vegetables and it was alright but for my first taste I didnt really like it but I could see getting a taste for it but my question is what is a California Roll and what are some very good sushi and what do you normally eat with it!? any info on sushi and favorites is appreciatedWww@FoodAQ@Com

California Rolls really aren't very good!.

They're made of rice (obviously), imitation crab (which is incredibly sweet and disgusting, and sometimes in a restaurant it will be real crab instead), and cucumbers and/or avocado!. Plus, eating this stuff and saying that you eat sushi because you eat this is like saying, "Oh, I eat Italian food because I eat pizza!." California Rolls are a type of sushi, yes, but they are not a good example AT ALL of what sushi is!.

My suggestion is that you go to your local, high-quality sushi bar and order some sake (RAW salmon) nigiri!. It tastes kind of buttery and creamy!. I think you'll rather enjoy it!. Don't be afraid of it because it's raw!. If you want to try something cooked FIRST (not instead, please give raw stuff a chance), try a shrimp tempura roll!. Then move on to some sake nigiri, then maybe some hamachi (yellowtail) nigiri!. Please don't start with California rolls or you'll be stuck in the "newb sushi eater" stage forever!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My favorite sushi is salmon, second is yellowtail tuna!. I like to get a shrimp roll with it, and some edamame - steamed soybeans, very tasty!. California rolls have cooked crab and avocado rolled in rice!. It's the most popular roll so it's a safe bet, a good way to get used to the style!. Some cooked sushi includes shrimp, or teriyaki eel!.

One fun way to try sushi is to go with some friends, everyone order something different and you all taste each other's food to see what you like!. That way you don't have to commit to a whole meal not knowing what you'd like!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Sushi that I like is spicy tuna, this is raw, and unagi this is sweet eal!. Shrimp is good too!. My fiance loves deep fried california roll, it's like tempura but they actually but the sushi in batter and deep fry it, it's good!.

Sushi is good eaten with salad with miso dressing, it's good with vegetable tempura, or just by itself!. A lot of people like to eat sushi with teriyaki chicken!.

But not all sushi is the same!. It really depends on the place too, there are some really good japanese restaurants and some really bad ones!. Ask around your area for good sushi places!. And if you're really cautious it's good to start slowly with the flavors!.

I have only two things to add to the answers that are already up!.

Take a piece of gari (pickled ginger) between each different type of sushi that you eat!.

Most sushi is eaten with wasabi, which is that green stuff!. It's like a Japanese horseradish and wasabi is, a friend of mine told me, Japanese for "fiery tears!." The name is fairly accurate, so just put a tiny little bit on your sushi!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I can't remember what all is in a California roll but I do have to recommend the crab !.!. shrimp !.!. or tuna rolls !.!. they are amazing! And rice noodles go great with sushi!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Depending on the freshness of the fish or the storage method employed, different kinds of fish sushi could be recommended!. If the fish is very fresh, or flash freezing is employed (so as not to destroy the texture), I'd recomment raw tuna or salmon -if the taste is bland, or the texture is odd, it was probably frozen slowly!.!.!. Roast eel is almost impossible to make badly!.
As far as fish eggs go, I'll recommend two: salmon eggs (ikura), which are large and salty; flying fish eggs (tobiko), which are small, brilliantly red, and rather sweet (I order them for dessert)!.
Raw squid (Ika) is pretty good -I like mine aged just a bit (and if you buy it anywhere besides Hakodate pier, it will be slightly aged)!.
Octopus can be good- it is always steamed- but sometimes it doesn't seem to have much flavour!.

I have also recently eaten sushi made with fruit!. Bananas and mangoes with sushi rice and nori is surprisingly good!.

As for what to eat with sushi!.!.!.
The normal condiments are soy sauce, wierd green wasabi (fresh is white), and pickled ginger!. Any combination of these three can be plastered onto each bite!.
I like to eat Japanese pickles with sushi- there are many varieties, but pickled diakon radish seems very popular!. Salted edamame (immature soy bean pods) can be munched with your meal!. A restaurant near me serves shrimp/octopus/crab with lemon slices and vinegar as an appetizer!. Various soups (dashi/chicken stocks, or miso-based) and salads (either the lettuce variety, or a combination of sea vegetables) are often available!. Ordering your sushi and x-tras like you might order tappas can be fun!.

PS: Stay away from squilla!. I haven't seen it for sale in the US yet, but it was a very unpleasant surprise for me in a Kyoto sushi bar, and it's bound to show up here sooner or later!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
