It's Chinese in origin and actually the Chinese equivalent of BBQ sauce as it's commonly used as a marinade for meats before roasting, like making char siew (Chinese BBQ pork)!. As a marinade it can be used on its own or in combination with other stuff, just experiment!. I use it as a base for a East-West marinade for stuff like pork ribs!.

Pretty versatile also as a table dipping sauce (dilute a bit if too thick) or used in stir-frys!. The dominant taste is sweetish but don't forget the hidden saltiness!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is not Thai at all, it is Chinese, and literately it means sea foods sauce!. However many Thai cusines use Chinese ingredients!.

hoisin is a paste made of several ingredients including soy beans, garlic, and chiles!. There really is no substitute for it, luckily it is in almost every grocery store in the ethnic food aisle, Asian foodWww@FoodAQ@Com
