Urad lentils/dals ? Your insights.?!

Question: Urad lentils/dals !? Your insights!.!?
I mistakenly bought some of these!. I rinsed them really good a couple of times before I simmered them down to make a dal!.I found the smell of them unpleasant!. I gave them a try afterward and did not like the taste either!. Are these an acquired taste or did I get a bad batch,or did I not clean them properly!? (Tempered with spices peppers and gee)!. Would appreciate your feed backWww@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
you most probably got a bad batch as urad dhaal hardly has a smell and very delicate flavour to it!. try to wash it a few times then soak it in cold water and a pinch of baking soda for a few hours or overnight before cooking them again!.

Here's an easy way to cook them!.

First wash and boil the urad dhaal that has been soaked overnight until they are well cooked and start splitting!.

On the side put together the tempering (tadka)

Get a pan hot and add some oil to it and half a teaspoon of whole cumin seeds and half a teaspoon of black mustard seeds!. When these start spluttering add a cinnamon stick, cardamom pods about two of them a clove and three or four peppercorns and a finely chopped onion and fry this off until its golden!.

Add to this some salt and ground corriander powder, turmeric, chilli powder and two chopped tomatoes!. cook this off then add the dhaal and let it boil!. before serving add a teaspoon of lemon juice and stir!.

For an alternative add some coconut cream and curry leaves as the dhaal is boiling!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
