Most people think that you should start with something mild like a California Roll!. I say cut right to the chase because otherwise you'll be stuck on the newb stuff forever!. Start with some sake (fresh salmon) nigiri!. Then move onto hamachi (yellowtail) nigiri!. Next, go for the maguro (tuna) nigiri!. Maki (rolls) are okay too, but they are very Americanized!. I say stick with as much nigiri as you can!. I find it much more enjoyable than rolls!. I have to tell you that when I go out for sushi, I eat A LOT of it (last time I was celebrating my new job and I spent 135 on MYSELF)!. I order about 8ish orders of nigiri and then a roll!.

If you're feeling really daring, go for some uni (sea urchin roe)!. A lot of people are turned off by it's color and texture, but it has a taste that you can't find in anything else!. It's absolutely wonderful!. <3

also, I recommend looking up all of your local restaurants and seeing what people say about the nigiri!. If people like the place just for its rolls, run away!. Rolls tend to hide the freshness of the fish!. If someone says something along the lines of, "This place has fresh fish and great nigiri," it's a probably winner!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Susie's suggestions are very good!. also, try nigiri sushi topped with ikura (salmon eggs), king clam, toro (blue fin tuna), mackerel, ika (squid) tako (octopus), and ama ebi (shrimp)!.

See if you can get the ikura topped with raw quail egg yoke!. The yoke is sweet and creamy and blends well with the salty and flavorful salmon eggs!. Mackerel is usually vinegerred!. Ika is raw and tako is cooked!. Ama ebi is raw shrimp tails - very sweet and much better than cooked shrimp!. Make sure they deep fry the shrimp heads/bodies, which you can eat whole!.

An often overlooked sushi is tamago (chicken egg) nigiri!. Many people consider tamago to be a waste of money, but it is a true art to prepare the tamago correctly!. The taste of the tamago is subtle (like most Japanese foods) but distinct and enjoyable!.

also, if you are siting at the sushi bar, feel free to make conversation with the chef!. Most sushi chefs are friendly and great conversationalists!. Get to know them and ask them for their recommendations!. If they feel like it, they will offer you free samples!.

Finally, it is true that Koreans are not Japanese, but there are many excellent Korean sushi chefs, some of whom have lived and trained in Japan!. also, sushi is very popular in Korea!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

susie's advice is spot on!.

I would add, if at all possible, and it is harder then you might think, choose a place that is run by Japanese people and/or has a Japanese sushi chef!.

Koreans are not Japanese, and neither is anyone else!. They will get it wrong!. Well, I went to a place in San Luis Obispo this year that is Korean run, but they get their fish off the dock every day, it was superb!. go for fresh first, then for the standards!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Most people prefer tuna, since it's so mild!. Halibut is good too; but salmon (especially salmon skin) may be an acquired taste:) My favorite (and my daughter's) is octopus, which doesn't have much flavor and is chewy, but so good when dipped in wasabi & soy sauce! !.!.!. California roll with eel is good (the sauce on the eel is especially good); I like Sweet Shrimp handrolls too!. There's usually a mixed sushi salad that you might like !.!.!. spicy tuna rolls!. We actually prefer sashimi though, which is just the sliced tuna / halibut, without any rice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Tuna items are the most common ones people like!. I recommend the Rainbow Roll and the Caterpillar Roll!. Good choices!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, tuna, or salmon!. My wife loves the California roll!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

start with tuna items!.!.!.i think they are the tastiestWww@FoodAQ@Com

Try the salmon rolls, they're my favorite!Www@FoodAQ@Com
