Did fortune cookies originally taste better? ?!

Question: Did fortune cookies originally taste better!? !?
I've heard that fortune cookies were invented in U!.S!. Chinese restaurants to satisfy Americans who expected dessert after their meal!.

However, what I don't know is if they were ever any better than the cardboard tasting things that are served today!. Does anyone know if fortune cookies were originally more like real cookies!? Are there any restaurants today that make their own fortune cookies, or are they always from a crate of 1000!?

Bonus points: guess what I had for dinner tonight!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Most fortune cookies taste lousy cause they're stale!. They get bought by the huge box full and by the time the restaurant get to the middle of the box, they've gone stale!.

But if they're fresh they're delicious! I went on a fortune cookie factory tour in San Francisco Chinatown when I was a kid, and they were just fantastic right out off of the pan!.

They were cooked by pouring the batter into a little flat pan on a post that was the same size as the cookie!.

Then as it cooked it was pulled off by some ladies who had their fingers heavily taped so they didn't burn them!. They quickly put in the fortune while the cookie was still hot and then folded them!. The cookie is pliable while hot, and hardens as it cools!.

This was in the mid-seventies and I'd bet that company is gone now, sad!. I'd guess most are made on a totally automated machine now, maybe that's why they don't taste as good anymore!.

Oh wow! I just checked, and the company is still there! The Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory! Here's a web site about them, with pictures!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

nope guess u watched too much TV for that story!.
fortune cookies was originally invented because a person wanted to pass a message to another during a war!. that message could be the strategy or some country's secret!. no one knew for sure!. and because during war, everything in and out of the country are inspected, so they came up with this idea in order to pass through!.
it later became popular as a snack in chinese countries!. Grandparents or the elders will prepare them during festivals!. but after it's popularity grew, it became a dessert in US!.
As for the original taste, it was really great as I remembered it when I was a child!. The way that they make it in the olden days was made something like a crepe and roll it up while it's still hot!. It was heated up over charcoal and as us Chinese say charcoal cooked food taste a lot better!.!. :)

How i miss those days!Www@FoodAQ@Com

The true story is a little stranger than what you understand!.
There was a Chinese restaurant in Los Angeles where it all started!. The son of the owner was an electrical engineer who got laid off!. He had no job!. He knew very little about cooking or running the restaurant!. His father hired him to take care of books and manage the kitchen!.
He had a keen sense of humor!. He used his typewriter and typed out a sheet of paper with one line jokes!. The original jokes were all stereo typing Chinese people and customs!. It was not telling fortune but telling jokes!.
He wanted it to be a surprise so the customer would leave the restaurant with a smile on their face!. The ingredients to make cookies were not important!. He asked the cooks to modify won-ton recipe to do do the trick The cookie just had to be hard enough!. The edibility or taste of the cookie was never a criteria!. The strips of one line jokes were cut with scissors and inserted inserted in the cookies!. The customers loved to laugh at themselves!. The one line jokes became one-line Chinese sayings and then the fortunes!. The rest is history!.
No Chinese restaurant makes these cookies on premise!. They are mass produced!. There is no change to the cookie in the shape or quality since they were originally introduced!. The content keeps changing!. As the lottery machines at the restaurants became popular, the Chinese cookies were inserted with randomly selected lottery numbers!. Nowadays, the restaurant owners can order fortune cookies with many different of messages, Chinese sayings, Fortunes, Lottery numbers, Chinese new year greetings, etc!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
