Star anise is the first spice that came to mind on reading your question , i am indian & we use a lot of spices, star anise is a lovely spice used as & when it should be, i can however not come to terms with it looking like a cockroach head !
Feel strongly that Khan has been very careless ,but at the same time cannot think something soft & fragile would stand up to the rigors of cooking ,for doubtful home cooked food or ingredients i go by the adage ' when in doubt toss it out ' ,in this case i would have definitely sent it back, stating my doubt & left it to them for scrutiny !.never hesitate to make a fuss in such cases ,it is your right to do so !.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Don't worry, it was probably Star Anise!. Kind of a sweet/tangy and often chewy spice!. It can get stringy, especially near the core!. I used to eat them plain as a kid!. Used in China, Japan, India, the like!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
