Way back when, when we were all dumb and stupid, we'd put a Baby Ruth candy bar in the punch bowl!. It looked like a turd!. Yeah, stupid, huh!?

It's a figure of speech!. It means doing or saying or being the one thing that ruins a really festive time!. Sometimes it is cultural ignorance but often enough it is just a dumb thing done or said that scars the event!.
