Making Biltong in the UK?!
I want to make some biltong at home, I have seen a few of these home making biltong kits just want to know if they actually work!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
The answer is probably no, due to the high humidity and low temperatures!.
The problem with making it in the UK is that you need a very warm, dry atmosphere, or it goes mouldy (and can develop botulism)!. In South Africa that's no problem, their climate if perfect, and the wouthern mediterranean would be similar, but in the UK, you'll be lucky!.
I wouldn't attempt it in Winter at all, in summer perhaps!. I've seen kits using light bulbs but you really need to dehumidify the air in a sealed environment!. To get anything close to the right conditions, the light-bulb kit would be insufficient, you'd need a 400W hydroponics light to generate the heat which may result in you getting a visit from the drug squad
It's not so hard commercially in the UK, Susmans make it but they can afford a large heat & humidity controlled facility!.
If you are going to have a try, wait until June next year!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's easy to make biltong!. What do you need a kit for!? I remember in the rural area back home (SA) we used to cut the raw meat into strips and marinate with spices and a little vinegar (to stop the flies) and then just hang it till it was as dry as we liked!. So there!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
