I am the owner of a sushibar and I know most american/european people use chop sticks for sushi!. However, in the good sushi restaurants in Japan, they serve you a hot, moist towel before dinner to wipe off your hands!. Then, using your fingers you should dip the fish side of the nigiri into the soy sauce and then take the whole thing in one big bite!.
The Japanese may be traditional, but I don′t think it′s forbidden to do the chop stick thing either!. If you wanna impress one though, use your hands!Www@FoodAQ@Com

no it is not a requirement! it is more proper though!. when you are out on an picnic it's OK to just use your hands but if not use the chopsticks!. it's just formality to use the chopsticks cuz it's like the spoon and fork of the Koreans!. Trust me with this ok!? my best friend is korean and she takes me along korean ceremonies, parties, restaurants, and other various events!. So just to be proper please use the stick!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yeah, I mean, you're supposed to, but most Americans are too lazy/ignorant to learn!. It's not hard!. I've been using them since I could hold them!. No, I eat it with my hands!. Some of it is just way too big to pop in your mouth whole and when you try to bite it in half while using chopsticks it just makes a mess!.
