Its the food of there country!.

I am a former chef and worked in Asia, and here in Toronto Canada we have a large Asian community, and I go to the Chinese markets here in our downtown Chinese area, it is mainly because they display everything in the open, people like to see, smell and touch the food, wrapping things up just gets them opened and manhandled!.

In Asian they do not have refrigeration so everything is out in the open in there markets, stores are different, it is just the food is more accessible to most people from Asian, whether it be Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese!. They feel abit taken back in our supermarkets as they cannot touch the food like they can in there own ethnic markets, it is a tradition in there cultures to be able to interact with the food, like fresh live fish and the way veg and fruit are there to touch and smell!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A lot of the produce and fish is sold fresh, locally grown and unpackaged!.!.!.

If you contrast that with a typical chain supermarkets where everything is packaged, canned or boxed to the point that the nutritional value is diminished due to age!.!.!. it looks good, but sitting on the shelf for weeks!.

Interesting how all the recent e!.coli problems have been foods available at a regular supermarket!. There's a lot to be said about buying foods that are locally grown and fresh as you would find at a local Asain/Chinese market and e!. coli is not one of them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

All of these answeres are racist and prejudicial!. The reason you "think" Asiann markets stink is because they sell more fresh seafood and meat than do western grocery stores, Often Asian stores in order to sell the freshest possible seafood keep the fish etc alive in tanks until a customer is ready to purchase it!. Fish and shellfish are then either steamed or sold to the customer after being cleaned and boned (which is usually done for the benefit of western customers who do not know how to clean their own seafood); the remains are left behind until the end of the day when it is all disposed of but the rotting bones and shells have begun to smell!. You can avoid the smell of rotting shellfish by purchasing pre-frozen seafood at western groceries, where you won't get the quality or freshness that you will find at Asian stores but you will pay much more for inferWww@FoodAQ@Com

maybe they are foreign food and you don't get use to the smell because you haven't been eating them and smelling them much!. Plus they are different compared to the food you eat!. Some chinese do get use to the smell because it is their food they eat usually!. Another reason is some food are not clean and they require you to clean them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A better question is why do MOST ethnic markets stink!.
Alot of it has to do with meat and fish that is cut fresh there!.
Notice there is no smell if there isnt a meat section!?
Thai and latino markets have the same problem!.
