French cuisine goes beyond steak frites, though it is ubiquitous (especially in restaurants that most people can afford!)!. Another user said fries are called steak frites!. That is not true!. That refers to the whole dish that consists of steak (sometimes finished in a sauce), french fries, and often a green salad!. Fries are simply "frites", maybe "pommes frites" if you want to get very specific!.

There are many French dishes which I enjoy, but I'm convinced that what you will love most are foods that do not necessarily have a name!. Restaurants in France are very different than in the States; menu items are not consistent, they vary with the season, availability of ingredients, and sometimes the whims of the chef!. You can go to a restaurant and then the next year go to the exact same place, and 50% of menu items may be different!

In france you will enjoy: hearty "stews" like beouf bourginon or coq au vin, meats cooked to perfection (none of that over-cooking unless YOU request it) finished in a tasty sauce, usually served with french fried potatoes, potatoes au gratin, and/or another vegetable (roasted, sauteed, fresh in the form of a salad)!. There are SO many different salads (my favorites are with foie gras de canard, fatty liver of duck, though the traditional Lyonnaise salad is also very nice)!. Some salads on the menu can be an "entree" (appetizer) and others can be a main plate (called "plat", pronounced with a long "a")!. The more substantial ones will I would say, ALWAYS have a meat in them!. I don't see soups quite as often on menus, but when they're there the most common are a simple "soupe des legumes" (vegetable soup) or French onion soup ("soupe des ognions")!. In the winter you can get fantastic seafood, notably oysters!. But don't count on getting those any other time of year! In the summer you will find a lot of mussels though, especially if you make a trip to the Cote d'Azur!. For the area of France that I live in, Fondue is a traditional and much enjoyed dish, as is the dish raclette!. These are both very popular in Paris as well!. Fondue can be cheese or meat!. The cheese fondue is cheese with wine and usually kirsch (sometimes something else, like cognac), served with bread and sometimes potatoes!. The meat is very thin slices of raw beef that you cook in a pot of either oil or broth, and rarely wine!. This type is served with an assortment of mayo based sauces (usually about 3-6 of them) and frites (or potatoes cooked in some other way)!.

An option that you will see and that you should try is to order a full menu!. This is an option on almost every menu at a real restaurant (as opposed to a take out place)!. This allows you to choose an entree + main plat + cheese course + dessert for one price!. Sometimes the menu will not include the cheese course, or there may be other combos available like just entree + dessert or plat + dessert!. At the cheese course they will likely come to your table with a tray of cheeses and allow you to pick!. Some restaurants limit you to 2 or 3, others will let you have whatever you want!. It also depends on how much your server likes you!. :-)

Dessert can be a lot of things!. In the summer (and even in the winter), ice creams, sorbets, and elaborate ice cream sundaes are very popular and may form the majority of the dessert menu!. You will also see chocolate mousse, creme brulee, cakes and tarts!.

You can ask for a "carafe d'eau" and they will bring you a jug of tap water!. This is usually free!. There is also usually a large selection of wines in the restaurant!.

In Paris, you must have crepes!. They are the street food of France and are wonderful!. They can have sweet or savory filling!. My favorite is with cinnamon and sugar!.

For breakfast you can stop by any of the many wonderful bakeries and get bread or pastries!. They also sell things like hot ham sandwich (croque monsieur)!. For lunch and dinner, if you want cheaper food (but also not as good quality) and a bunch of different options to choose from at once including many non-French, go to the Latin Quarter!.

I think that your attitude about not trying "anything nasty" like caviar isn't the best one to have when going to France!. You will see things on the menu that you never would have thought you would try, and they will be delicious!. In some restaurants you may feel slightly miserable if you refuse to try things you think sound "gross" as there may not be much else on the menu!. Frog legs, snails, liver, all these are very tasty things that I used to think I would never eat!.

And by the way, caviar is extremely delicious!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Okay the French call their fries Steak Frites (pronounce freets)!. Everything in France is great!. TRY all the cheese, bread, pastries that you can!. OMG I am jealous of you because France is one of the food capitals of the world and you sure don't know too much about that!. Eat everything!.!.!.!.!.!.!.I would die and go to heaven!.

Try duck confit, pigeon (we are the only country not into pigeon but it's a delicacy everywhere else!. Try a classic french dish called Cassoulet!. Eat baguettes with real French butter!. Seriously just eat everything!. It will be worth it!.

The one thing i have learned is to stray away from typical tourist locations and ask the locals where they eat!. That's always where the best food is!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
