Get it from a place where the food moves quickly!. You don't want a sandwich from a place with meat that had been cut hours earlier and sitting around!. The best time in my eyes is going toward the end of lunch to assure you are getting freshly cut meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
The best thing to do is to try one!.
I would probably pick a day when I have a bit of time, and observe the fellows operation and decide if he appeared to be hygienic!.
As for taste they will most likely vary as they will invariable have their own recipes, even if they call them by the same name!.
If the guy seems to be a happy sort he may let you taste test the sauce first!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Most ethnic cuisines have foods that are prepared in the same way all over the country!. With Gyros this is basically true!. They pretty much taste the same where ever you get them!. I would however, be more inclined to buy one from someone who is from that country rather than getting one from a Chinese owned Bodega!. Nothing against the Chinese, but they do make spring rolls better!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Traditionally, a gyro is Greek style prepared meat with some vegi's and a Greek sauce on pita bread!. Now, every deli sells them!. But not too many sell the Greek one!. You have to ask for it!. And you can order Chicken gyro, Beef gyro, Lamb gyro, with any kind of sauce!. YUM!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
high volume is always a plus, especially since you're dealing with meat on an open spit!. thank goodness we have nyc's online restaurant inspection results over this way!. volume doesn't always equal food safety though, so its not always easy to judge, but hey what can ya do!. probably as safe as eating a burger!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
