Question: Calling all sushi experts: How do I order this type of sushi!?
You know those 6-piece little circular rice sushi thingers with salmon or squid or whatever on the inside!? I want to order those at a take-out sushi place over the phone, but I'm afraid the lady won't understand me!. I'm also not sure of what exactly to ask for!. Once, my friend told me, she tried to order them but she got that type of sushi (I used to know the names, but I havent ordered sushi in forever) with the raw fish on top and rice on the bottom!. Those are good, just not at this place!.

So the question is, how do I order the "wimpy" sushi xD!? I think theyre called salmon rolls!.!.or something!? I dont know!. Someone, please help me v!.v I really need to be schooled in the art of ordering sushi!.

what you are looking for is ROLLs or Maki!. Maki mean Roll in japanese and in the US there is different types!. Typical Roll is Uramaki, means insidout roll!. These originated from California roll!.
Rice facing outside with seaweed and ingredient on the inside!. then there is semi traditional roll Tatemaki, means Vertical Roll!. Seaweed is outside and rice and ingredient is indide and rolled vertical!. then there is Tateuramaki, inside out and rolled vertical!. Traditional Roll like on the pitcture you posted was called Hosomaki, translate to Slim Roll!. It is rolled seaweed outside rice inside rolled vertical and only contains one ingredient!. Rolls like Rainbow roll or caterpiller rolls people are always familiar with are Uramaki with toppings like fish avocados or roes!.
second picture you have is Nigiri sushi, a traditional Japanese sushi!. All fish should be called the same for example Tuna is maguro Salmone is Sake etc!. All Rolls except traditonal rolls are different in name and chefs usually make one up or steal one from the other so it you'll hear lots of simillar names but ingredient in the rolls are most likely different from every restaruant you go!. If you find a roll that you like write down what's in it and what souce it has!. Most sushi bars have same sauces!. Eel Sacue, (sweet "teriyaki" type sauce), Spicy mayonaise (some sushi bars call it house sauce and have their name on the sauce but it all has the same orange color), then there is Sriracha (vietamese Chili sauce with rooster on it), and ponzu, citrus soy sauce!.
so remember, is it Uramaki, tatemaki, hosomaki, tateuramaki, or futomaki!. whats inside the roll!? cucumber, avocado, radish sprouts, crab, etc what's on the top of it if any!. if you can remember that, you'll get the same product at any sushi bar if sushi chef know what he is doing!. FYI most sushi chefs are not japanese and don't know the terms if not properly trained!. there is many korean and chinese sushi chefs who claim to be japanese or was trained in japan but is 99% false!. they don't usually speak japanese and will never work in japanese sushi bar without speaking the language!.
this is also a good way to test to see how good the sushi chef is!.

fish in the middle of the roll is maki, fish on top rice on bottom is nigiri, fish alone is sashimiWww@FoodAQ@Com

Tell them specially what you want to order and you probably met to say MAKI roll!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you specify that you want "rolls" you should be fine!. Rolls are also called "maki"!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
