My chopsticks cross towards the top?!
I was eating at a Japanese restaurant with friends and one of my friends (Not even japanese!.!.not even asian for that matter!), said "That is the WRONG way to use chopsticks! I HATE when people don't use them properly! They are supposed to stay straight except for picking food up, and they should never cross at the top!"

like that, but more towards the top while I am eating!.
I sank in my seat then I said "I will use them how I want to!." which shut him up!. I didn't stop thinking about it though!.
Is it really totally improper for the chopsticks to cross at the top!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am Korean and use chopsticks all the time!. I have not heard about crossing chopsticks at the top being rude or offensive, but it is incorrect!. I have even seen people do this!. However, used correctly they do not cross!. Again, if you do it I don't see this as offending at all!.
Here is a site on chopstick etiquette especially Japanese!. Crossing chopsticks is not one of the things you shouldn't do according to this site!. Show this to your friend

Yes it is improper, but if you aren't in a formal dining situation, I really wouldn't worry about it!.
Unless, of course, you care about offending any of the Japanese who see you using them incorrectly!. If you care about that, then you should probably just work on using them the right way!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Cute chopsticks! Anyway, if your chopsticks are crossing at the top, you are probably dropping a lot of food!. Your friend sounds a little rude!. However it is bad luck to cross chopsticks, a Chinese symbol for death!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Why not just practice learning how to do it the right way!? You'll figure it out pretty quickly and then you'll do it right from now on!?
Your friend maybe needs to find something else to be so passionate about though!. Jeez!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Ok, I'm Asian and I lived in that part of the world my entire childhood and, yes, my chopsticks cross, and no, no one had ever complained!.
In my opinion, it's just a matter if you are or aren't able to hold food with it!. I don't think a Chinese superstition should tell you not to have your chopsticks cross because so what if they cross, no one die! Beside, cross chopsticks just look more cool =] (I know how to do both, but i just like them cross better, in my opinion, you would use less hand muscle in other to hold the food if your chopsticks cross, at least the two will stay together and you don't have to worry about keeping them from slipping out of your hand)Www@FoodAQ@Com
