The very first time I had Indian food, I had chicken tikka masala over biyriani rice and naan!. It was awesome!. It was chicken in a very flavorful creamy sauce!. Naan is flat bread, and was great dipped in the sauce!. Mine wasn't spicy, but you can ask most restaurants to cut back on the spiciness!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Ok, Most Indian restaurants abroad break the rule by having beef on the menu!. lol!. So anyway you are going to eat something unoriginal!. Indian food isn't really hot or spicy always as it is stereotyped and considering the sheer number of communities in India there isn't anything that is Indian food except that it hails from an Indian palate!.
For example, people in North India don't eat seafood but people along the coast of Bombay adore seafood but again people along the Eastern coast would prefer to eat sweet water fish!. It is a complex system so it is better to experience what you get locally!.
You can choose from the menu and most good restaurants will have an explanatory line or two about the dish so see what you like or explain your likings to the people serving you or preparing the food!. they would recommend something!.
Lastly always enjoy something new with an open mind instead of what you hear, maybe your experience might differ!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Korma is the mildest curry dish!.
You could also get Biryani (rice with meat & veg usually) it can be spicy, so ask the waiter for it to be not very spicy!.
on the menu it should tell you how spicy the dish is!.
Butter Chicken is goood!.
this is an example of a typical indian menu
