it's not a holiday or seasonal food, but sushi really is traditionally (or maybe "usually" is the right word) eaten at a certain time of day!.
it's a dinner food, people might eat it at lunch randomly but not as much!. and eating it for breakfast is similar to having pizza for breakfast in the US, someone might do it, but most people wouldn't!.
fish sushi was originally meant just as a way to preserve the fish, wrapping it and using salt and rice !.!. the word "sushi" just means "vinegar rice", if you ordered sushi in japan you'd need to be more specific with the name!. like whatever-type-of-meat sushi and not just sushi, since you'd just be ordering something with rice!.
and it's "traditionally" not eaten with chop sticks, people normally use their hands!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Just to clarify, I ama former chef and worked in Japan with a Canadian hotels chain in the 1980's, and in Japan sushi is eaten with or at all meals even breakfast is not uncommon, it is a lunch and dinner meal mainly but they will eat it as a snack at night, and like now in North America and Europe, sushi is available in all stores from the corner mini-marts to major grocery centres!.
Sushi is not just fish and seaweed, it can be rice and veg or rice and egg toppings, in Japan it is not a formal meal and is enjoyed as stated with your fingers, and all in one bite!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
