Answers:
Because of our climate we have traditionally opted for food that will keep us warmed and sustained - as we were also a nation of farmers!.
So our food preferences developed into things such as roasted meats with potatoes and root vegetables,
suet puddings
and fruits of the orchard that have been preserved and stewed - such as stewed apples and custard or ditto with rhubarb!.
In fact - we used the ingredients we had to hand which seemed a fairly healthy way of eating - and it was always in season!.

It is only the advent of over eating and importing of out of season vegetables that has altered our diets, along with imports such as american fast food!.

On the whole though roast dinners, sausages and potatoes, steak and kidney puddings, pasties, shepherds and cottage pies - have are all staple english foods!.
The cottage (beef) and shepherds (lamb) pies were eaten with the cheaper cuts of meat cooked long and slow!. The same still applies!.
If you make a cottage pie with best minced steak - it loses its 'body' and just doesnt taste the same as cheaper mince thicker and rougher cut, that is slow cooked with seasonings!.

Yorkshire puddings were also eaten as a dish on their own with gravy and onions!.

Everyone knocks the brits for their food - but our TRADITIONAL food is absolutely nutritious and fine!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Traditional English cuisine can be found in Mrs Beeton or other Victorian cookbooks!. Among them, just off the top of my head, are:
Jellied eels
Steak and kidney pie, pork pie, ham and egg pie, other pies
Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding
Christmas cake and puddings
Mince pies
Scones
Teacakes
Clotted cream
Cheddar, Red Leicester, Stilton and other good cheeses
Muffins
Lemon Sponge, Victoria sponge and other cakes
Mulled ale or wine
Black pudding

Golly!.!.!.now you've made me hungry! LOLWww@FoodAQ@Com

From the West Country
Cornish pasties!.
Hevva Cake
Saffron buns
Clotted cream
Starry Gazy Pie with seven kinds of fish
Cornwall/Devonshire Cream Teas
Cornish black cheese also known as pepper cheese
Lamb with mint sauce
Mint Sauce
Game Pie
Roast Beef with horseradish and mustard

Apple pie made with real Somerset apples!.

The list goes on!.!.!.
British traditional cooking also uses imports that have become naturalised such as all the chutneys, pickles and relishes which one does not find on the continent!.

Of course the list could go on and on, it's a pity so many people only ever think of fish and chips and egg and bacon!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
