what are the crunchy things on pizza crust?!

Question: What are the crunchy things on pizza crust?
the tiny little crunchy things. what are they, i wonder? pizza crust would not be the same without them. yet i cannot taste them really. some are yellow. some are a pale beige. are they purely utilitarian? do they serve some higher purpose? with their crispins and their crunchins. will i ever know the origin of such an illusive gastronomical delight? will i be left to ponder the mysteries of purposes so denied my woe begotten soul?
