Canadians: when travelling in the USA have you been grossed out by how salty their food is?!
Answers:
Hell, I live here and it grosses me out! Not to mention my friends and colleagues I observe salting their food without even tasting it.
A lot of times in restaurants I tell them I'm hypertensive and ask for my food to be prepared with reduced salt. It doesn't always help but sometimes.
It depends where you eat. All the chains are definitely too salty. Practically inedible.
I wouldn't say all American food is too salty, though. There are plenty of nice restaurants all over the country.
If you are on a road trip, you don't have too many options. Better to try restaurants in rural or urban areas. Skip the suburbs altogether.
i have never in my life shaken a saltshaker to enhance food..i almost pass out when i see friends..shake..shake..shake..i always order fries with no salt.but other cultures are strong with the salt. also...soy sauce.condiments from asia with oodles of salt..ever try a fish sauce...i like spicy food but can pass on the salt..lay potato chips has got to be the worst with salt..even buy my potato chips unsalted..dont forget..america is made up of many cultures..and look at some of the cultures that crave sugar..i thought i was going to go into shock after i had a mexican soda..not canadian but love to visit my love..montreal.
Yes I have! Last summer I went to NYC and my family got some pasta and chicken penne at a fast food chain to bring back to eat in the hotel. Oh my goodness! The chicken was good, I had to admit that, but I had to down soo much water because it was too salty! I thought McD's fries were over salty (sometimes) in Canada, but that chicken.. was even worse!
We need a lot of salt to balance out all the chemicals, fat & sweeteners we have in our foods!
But yea, I hate going out to eat for the same reason. I'd take black pepper, or a hot sauce any day (although 'some' hot sauces have too much sauce as well.)
All I know is that Americans are known for their fast food..
