California rolls are not really Japanese, but a Western style of sushi. The increasing popularity of sushi around the world has resulted in variations of sushi typically found in the West but rarely if at all in Japan. These creations are made to suit the Western palate and were fuelled by the invention of the California roll.

In Japan they do have sushi rolls, which are called Makizushi (巻寿司). The most popular or common form of sushi is the classic Nigirizushi (握り寿司), which is a bed of sushi rice, usually with a bit of wasabi, and a topping draped over it.

no.
and most of what we know as Sushi ahs been adapted in the USA ( and then in Europe) to fit the local taste.
in japan you won't find a japanese DEAD eat that crap.
By the way, this is also true with Chinese food.or any other national food. Most of it has been adapted and has nothing or very little to do with the original.

Actually they do. Makizushi is considered sushi for the gaijin. The Japanese don't eat it a lot, preferring nigirizushi (or, real sushi), but are gracious enough to offer it for squeamish gaijin.
