Flan is made of a lot of eggs, evaporated milk, and a lot of sugar. You cook it in an oven on top of a pan full of water. before you pour the batter into the pan though, you have to put melted sugar into it, enough to cover the bottom of the pan up to a bout a half inch. Cook for an hour, and then flip ot over. The sugar will have melted and when you flip it upside down, the caramel covers the dessert and makes it the most delicious thing ever. It's a christmas tradition in my house, but we also just make it whenever we feel like it. It's so popular because the ingredients are so affordable. And its freaking delicious.

Hope that helped!

I do know that this type of dish is found in other countries other than Spain. Flan is a type of custard.

I found a good website for you about flan:
