Well you have to remember that in the 1930's everyone were going threw the Great Depression so the food they ate were mainly homegrown and livestock. I am from Mississippi and I asked my grandfather this question. He was young but he says he remembers always eating biscuits and butter mixed with homemade syrup. Also homemade preserves, and anything fresh from the garden was what they mostly ate. Potatoes and eggs were a huge part of their evening meal. He also said that every Sunday his Mom (Momma Rosie) would kill a chicken to serve it after Sunday service. I did some research check out the websites below:

contact a museum in a city of your choice, Atlanta, New Orleans, Raleigh, Mobile, etc. A museum loves to help people do research and work on a project. Try a couple of menus from restaurants. Paula Dean who is a professional chef and cook book author would have access to that information.

There are just two words that describe southern cooking.. of ANY year.. and "FRIED" is the first word.. followed by the ingredient of your choice. They have FRIED BUTTER down south.
