Is a sweet potato and yam the same thing?!

Im trying to follow a Rachael Ray recipe and her sweet potatoes are orange. The only potatoes in the stores that I can find that are orange are yams.

Just use orange yam, that's probably what she used.

You can't find "true" sweet potatoes because they come form mexico.

The food network.

No, although in USA sweet potato are called yams. Sweet potatoes are actually much different from true Yams. Most likely the yams you saw at the store are actually sweet potatoes.

There are hundreds of varieties of this root vegetable, with the flesh ranging from
white, yellow, orange, red and even purple in color and the thin skin either being white, yellow, orange, red or purple. Sweet potatoes skins are usually thin and smooth I have not yet seen a true yam with thin smooth skin.
