"Cereal" in this case probably does not refer to the processed food known as breakfast cereal. In general, cereals are grains and the seeds of grasses. Some common cereals (depending on where in the world you are) are wheat, corn, rice, oats, and barley.

Grains can be grown in large amounts on a small patch of land, they store well, you can make lots of other foods out of them (noodles, bread, beer) and they contain lots of nutrients and food energy. That's why cereals are staple foods all over the world.

You normally have cereals as a breakfast, the clue is in the name. It BREAKS the FAST that you had over night. Also most cereals include vitamins and fibre that help you heart and diet. Most don't have many calories in either making it a great breakfast
