Wasabi is a root from a plant that grows naturally in Japan along stream beds in mountain river valleys. Wasabi is used as a condiment and has a really strong flavour like hot mustard. It is also known as Japanese horseradish or Japanese green mustard. Fresh wasabi root can be difficult to find so a lot of people use wasabi paste.

It's a root, like horseradish. However it's very expensive and not seen very often outside of Japan. The green paste we get with sushi is not made with pure wasabi, but is mixed with some horseradish and some green food coloring.
it's a root vegetable. Japanese grate it (traditionally using shark skin) and use it in a variety of ways with sushi and the like. The paste that is more common in the US is a mass-produced/bastardized version.
