Can I eat the little flowers on chinese broccoli?!

Question: Can I eat the little flowers on chinese broccoli?
My Chinese friends always told me not to eat the little flowers, but sometimes I do. They claim it's poison, but I don't think so, wouldn't there be a warning to the local Americans required by law? What scientific evidence is there? Is this a myth or common misconception? If it is poison, what poison, how does it hurt you? What's the cure? Can I eat them when they are young and green?

Answers:

Just an old wives tale. I eat them all the time as does my wife and 2 1/2 year old daughter. One of our favorite veggies. I can't think of any Brassica that produces a toxin. Eat away.

No, the flowers aren't poisonous. Also, it's not like you're going out and buying a kilo of broccoli flowers.

The main reason you don't want Chinese broccoli with flower means they are older and not as tender.

In regards to warning people, no law is required. It's just common sense.
For example, potatoes that have turned green should be peeled until you see no green on the potato. The green is toxic and eating too much can cause an upset stomach. Again, you really need to eat a lot.

Yes, you can eat the little flowers. I have never removed or avoid eating them. Its not poison so don't need cure for it. It doesn't needs to be very cooked just like most vegetables too.
