What is the use of nutmeg for a custard pie?!

Question: What is the use of nutmeg for a custard pie?
I want to bake one and in where I lived before they usually call it egg pie. I liked it very much especially when my dad brings one home, and now I would like to try and bake one, and when i looked for a recipe, it said:
EGG PIE INGREDIENTS
4 eggs lightly beaten
2 1/2 cups evaporate milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 unbaked pie shell
grated nutmeg (optional)
*nutmeg is optional that is why i was wondering why it is optional. :)

It adds a nice plavour. If you find that you don't like it, that's OK. That's why it says 'optional'

It gives texture and colour to the top of the custard. It also enhances the custard's flavour. Can you skip it? Sure, instead add a dash of allspice, anoto, or cinnamon. Good luck!

It gives the egg & milk and wonderful aroma... Maybe it's optional because not everyone likes it.
