Is porridge in the UK the same as oatmeal in the US?!

Question: Is porridge in the UK the same as oatmeal in the US?
How do they differ from gruel?

Answers:

Porridge can be made from oatmeal but it takes longer than making it from rolled oats. Here in the U.K. we tend to buy porridge oats (rolled oats) rather than oatmeal because they can be cooked in a pan for just a few minutes, or even quicker in the microwave (with milk or water or a mix of both). Porridge is a very nutritious breakfast (in fact it can be eaten any time by those who are fans of it).

Oatmeal is a porridge but all porridge is not oatmeal.Cream of wheat is a porridge.Porridge can be made from any grains or legumes.(remember the nursery rhyme:peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold...)
I'm not in the UK but I believe oatmeal is probably what they are referring to when they say porridge.
